I have a '63 GMC 1/2 ton pickup and it has the original V6 in it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how many were made with the V6 in them. Everyone i've talked to has never heard of a '63 truck with a V6. It also came from the factory with valve covers that have a red, black, and yellow plaid stripe look. Any help would be appreciated on how many were made or where I could look to search the info. thanks

Howdy.... ALL GMC trucks up to 1966 had V6's. In '67 the tooling was sold to auto makers in Canada to be put in cars and trucks up there. I think they were still GM vehicles. Eventually, after Canada redesigned and reconfigured the V6 for better performance, GM started "importing" the engine back here for the '80s smogger cars. Some trucks and (UGH!) Corvettes had that motor in them!!! Of course, that was before turbocharging.... Hope this helps ya out. Keep on cruising... Big Dave

the big v6 was used in many gmc trucks from '60 to '66.This was a very reliable motor and had a reputation as a torque monster, but it also got a bad rap for fuel economy. The plaid valve covers are factory and rumored to have been part of a promotion to show how thrifty the v6 could be. this v6 was also the base for a v12 GMC used in their big trucks. Randy

Many people say they (1/2 ton) all came with v-6's,but I have a '64 GMC with a 283-powerglide thats documented. Its a Canadian model so maybe thats the reason for exceptions.

They were torque-monsters for sure. they were also heavier than hell. I used to rebuild them when I was in California in the mid 70's. the valve covers looked a lot like the 348's and 409's, and the pistons are damn near the size of paint buckets.

I have an '81 chevy with a 250 6 cylinder with integrated head. I have replaced the head gasket and runs fine when it is reved up but it dies at idle. I have checked all vacumn lines and reset all valve lash several times and it still won't idle. Anybody have any ideas?
