I have access to some rough cut chestnut wood for my bed, but since my old bed was dust and rust, I couldn't take measurements to know what size boards I'll need, let alone the hole locations, grooves etc.. Anyone know where I could get this info?

I went through Classic Parts of America and got a pre cut and drilled wood kit with wood strips for a fairly reasonable price. you should really save yourself the hastle of all those measurements and just try them out

I would go that route, but the truck was my grandfathers, and the wood came from a tree planted by my great grandfather, so for sentimental reasons I wanted to go this route (plus chestnut is going to look really hot!) I think Im going to order the bed kit so I can copy measuments, the resell it. so stay tuned for a good deal on new bedwood!

Can't you just bring the wood t the truck along with a saw and some basic tools, then cut it on-site? I'd think this would be little different than any cabinetry project, and actually measuring all your cuts and drill holes right on the vehicle would insure the best fit and finish... Or am I missing something?
Oh, and if you could, please shoot photos and store them someplace like Photobucket gallery so we can watch the process?? If I ever get a classic truck, I really want the wood and chrome bed too, and watching others perform the process is always VERY useful.
Good luck!!

Why don't you contact GM for build sheet on truck. They will send you every configuration they made avail. for that model and year. They will also send you all of the OEM and After Mrkt Suppliers of everything made for it...and it's free! I have a '57 3100 4WD (NAPCO Conversion)Shortbed Stepside and I wouldn't mess with my truck without this literature! You can order them ready for your bed.
