the first thing to do is not use any of the exisisting wires and be sure to unplug wires from external regulator take the new alternator and look where the top plug goes and you should see a f or a 2 run a wire from there to battery bolt on back of alternator then run one from there to positive battery post.

Ok I am having a regulator problem as in it blows or goes bad. I have had this 1969 for 20 years and the wiring is getting bad. But the battery, alternator are all good and new. I just can not figure out what is making my regulators go, I have been working on it for 3 days and went through 4 regulators. I wonder if bypassing my regulator would help??
Also my backup lights are not working again, might have come apart when I taped them up after splicing them together.
I need to take this truck from Ontario Canada to Texas on Saturday and need advice. I am wanting to shoot it and get it out of my misery hehe, we have this love hate relationship after 20 years.

So taking a wire from the f post (plug in) to the battery and then what do you do with the other plug?? And do you run the wire from the red post of the alternator to the pos. post of the battery??

Check out www.MadElectrical.com; he has a whole bunch of wiring diagrams you can copy.  I just re-wired the charging system on my 67 GMC 3/4 ton and converted to internal regulator using his directions.  I'm very pleased with the results.  Good luck!

run a wire from the terminal marked f some have a 2 instead of a f this is located on the top of the alt. to the terminal marked bat. on the back of the alt.then run a wire to the positive side of the battery make sure you are using an alt. with a built in regulator and be sure to unplug the external regulator and then start your engine and pull off pos. cable and if it stays running it is charging.
