New to this forum, so greetings all. My problem is my 1961 Chevy 282 V8 Fleetside pickup won't start. Ran all summer just fine, then started to run rough, especially during acceleration. Drove into the garage and a few says later tried to start it up and it cranked, but no start. I have checked for spark, none. Replaced points and condensor, properly gapped, Distributor cap, rotor, new coil, and starter is fine. Checked the fuel pump, again working fine. Any help would be appreciated!

Take a wire and run from the batarie the switch side of the resistor then try and start. If you can't find the resistor run one from the batarie to the switch side on the coil. don't run very long this way it will burn the points. If it fires up this way you have a bad switch or a problum inbetween.

Probably safer to pull the wire off the hot side of the coil, and use a test light to check the switch. If it tests good, pull the ground side, and hook the test light clamp to a 12v source. Crank the motor over by hand to see if the points circuit is switching properly. Maybe pull a plug, to see if they are wet from not firing. Then jumper the plug to ground, and crank the starter, to set if it is firing.
If both those check out, and the fuel pump is working properly, I'd look at the carb.

Safer?? I was thinking back and rememberd GM has a wire that runs from the hot off the batarie from the silinoid to the coil just for stating perpeses ( off the start post I think ) This must be conected. I had one brake off once on a 61 car.

Normally, if the crank fire wire breaks off, the engine will still try to start, when you let off the key, while it is still turning.

Sorry, But I have tried all that you have mentioned and still no start, still no spark. It was suggested in another forum that it could be the timing gear and chain have gone bad. Any thoughts on that? It is getting cold where I live and to work in an unheated garage isn't my kind of fun. I might just wait until spring to work on it, but still need to know my options.
