I recently acquired a 1972 Chevy C-10 Deluxe that was my grandfather's.  I've been learning a lot about how these beasts work and have been trying to tune this C-10 up.  I rebuilt the carb and then started tuning the points and then the timing.  When I started setting the fuel mixture and the idle settings I started getting some different results.  First I set the idle to what the factory specs and when I restarted it the next day it didn't want to turn over.  Then I set the fast idle to to 1850 RPMs like the manual said.  Next day it sounded like it was revving to at 6 grand and it was bellowing smoke!  I've got good compression, good vacuum, the dwell is set correctly, as well as the timing.  I finally got the idle to behave somewhat.  However when I put it in drive and hit the gas it stalls.  I can hit the gas in park and it won't stall as early as when its in drive but it will stall.  I'm a newbie at this so sorry if these are rudimentary questions.
