I'm putting a 350 small blcok with a 400 turbo tranny in my 50 chevy 1/2 ton.  I already have the motor mount and tranny mount kit - any recommendation on how far back to position the mounts?

Unless you want to modify the firewall I like to leave enough room to place my hand between the distributor and firewall. Also bottom out the front suspension and leave about an 1 1/2" clearance for the oil pan you want to use, if you're lowering the truck. Also the crankshaft/ rear pinion angle need to match to avoid universal joint problems. Hope this helps. There are a lot of "how to" books published on swaps, with a lot of detailed  info. Good luck!
