I did a search before posting this. I am thinking of buying a 56 GMC, mounted on a 79 Chevy C10 chassis. The cab/body came from a South Dakota farm truck, which had a title. The seller in Minnesota says the cab has the ID tag (VIN tag)in the cab, and he has a SD title or bill of sale from the original owner. I suppose then the ID number in the cab becomes the vehicle VIN number even if it has a newer chassis and drivetrain under it?

Given all that, I believe in Wisconsin it requires a title search, title transfer/new title and vehicle inspection. If that passes, then I hopr it can be titled it for road use again as a 1/2 ton pickup.

Anybody else have direct experience on this? My goal is a classic looking daily driver that I can actually use like a new pickup (typical home owner light duty hauling/towing).

Hey I am also in Wisconsin... If the truck has a title that is valid and clear. Titling in Wisconsin will not be a problem. The DMV will do a title search because it is out of state, and then they will issue a new title. They will not inspect the truck or even look at it. I recently titled a 60 chevy and told them it was yellow, the truck is actually black, but it is being prepped for paint now... In other words the DMV will never know it is on a different chassis....

If the vehicle has a salvage title or only a bill of sale then I would steer clear of it... The issue is to get a "Builders" title in Wisconsin you are going to need to provide a bill of sale for not only the body... but one for the frame, and the motor, and the trans, etc... And then they are going to inspect the vehicle and check the VIN on every part to make sure it isn't stolen, then they will issue a title... since you don't know the parts are all legit I wouldn't bother with it.

Thanks for the reply, and those are some really good tips. Reminds me how stupid I was to sell the 55 Chevy 3200 I had back in Brliion, which had a completely clean title, from the original owner.

Got rid of that to get married. Now divorced again, and I gave up the six-car garage I had built too! I tell ya, when we think with the little head we are dangerous!

I'll make sure the 56 Jimmy has a clear title before I settle any dollars on it.
