Trouble down-shifting

I recently bought a 1958 Chevy Apache Longbed.  It has the 283 with 4-speed granny gear transmission.  I'm having trouble downshifting from 3rd to 2nd; it is very hard to force it in to 2nd.  Upshifting is no problem and downshifting from 4th to 3rd is no problem.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve M.

Try cheking the gears in the tranny to see if one is ever so slightly miss-allined or loose. I had an 88 gmc that did the same thing but it had a 5-speed in it, so it turned out to be a improperly placed and fitted gear in the tranny.

Okay- thanks.  That sounds logical.  I assume the tranny needs to come out to check that?

For pulling the tranny, the shop manual isn't too clear.  Does the tranny get pulled up and out through the cab or dropped down below?

Thanks for any advice!
