If you're going to resto-mod your truck, I'd suggest putting in a little more modern drivetrain, like a 302cu.in.Ford with an AOD trans for a little more drivability. Don't forget to upgrade the rearend also. If you're only planning to cruise locally, then the flathead will probably be just fine, providing it's in good running order to begin with. Good Luck and most of all, HAVE FUN and enjoy your truck

Thanks Smurf1, I'll look into buying a 302cu.in and an AOD tranny. Im a personal fan of the stock 3 speed thats in it, but if that AOD is really good for a route-66 road trip, then I'll swap!!! What would u suggest for a rearend? Im thinkin like a 410 rearend. As for the flatthead I was lookin into that eddelbrock complete flatthead upgrade convirsion and I was quoted a cool $1500 for that to be done.

As far as the rearend, I'm thinking an 8" or 9" from an older Mustang, Cougar, Granada, or Lincoln Versaie, with 3.00 or 3.25 gear ratio. Wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade the brakes, along with the drivetrain. Just my thoughts on the subject.

IMHO, if resto is any part of your plan, there is no reason to ditch the flathead.
Hit some swap meets, and see what bargains you can score on vintage, or re-pop speed parts.  Speedway Motors has a whole section of flathead stuff.

If you like the 3-speed, keep it.  You might even get lucky enough to find one, with a Borg-Warner R10 overdrive attached.
