I have a 1956 235 chevy pickup I am in the process of rebuilding the engine. Have heard the old canister style oil filter is not very effective and only filters about 20% of the oil! From the looks of this engine, I believe it. This is the worst inside engine I have ever seen. Not so much damage, just gooo and carbon everywhere. I am using a scraper to pill it off. This is on the inside!! I want to retorfit a screw type modern oil filter and adapt it to filter all the oil. Has anyone done this on a 235. It will include drilling some holes in the block and caping an oil port. Thanks.

Go to inliners.com and they have a tech article on adding a full flow system.

I used the retro fit from inliners on my 59 235, it works awsome cause your picking up on the pick up tube, filtering and than putting the oil back in the galley, i also ran a tee and put a braided line to the outside of the rockers so they get full pressure and fast. the machine shop that did the internals for me thought it was a great idea and use this syst. on all the 235,s they do now. if you need a few picts i can e mail them to you.
