hey guys, i recently picked up a 68 c10 it has a manual three speed, on the colomn, my issue is that when i hit the highway my rpm,s seem to be awfull high, i would like to put a decent tranny into it that will help with my highway speed situation, im on a budget as well, (of course) does anyone have and decent tranny ideas, or maybe some gear ideas, the truck has a 307 down in it, i sure would appreciate any help i could get guys, and if anyone has more ideas for some decent mileage on that truck lol, thanks and stay safe

Garrison , many people go with a mid 80's S10 - T5 ( 5 speed ) transmission . They will give you the overdrive you need to bring your hwy RPM's down to a manageable level . It should stand up to the 307 as long as you don't abuse it . You can use one from a Camaro or Firebird if you have bucket seats . The main difference between the two tranny's is shifter location , with the S10 model located forward ( on the tranny ) and the Camaro/Firebird shifter being at the rear of the transmission housing . If you go to www.inliners.org , you'll find lots of info ! The Inliners site has a T5 page which can answer lots of your questions . I have been looking , for a while , for that exact transmission for my '65 C10 but haven't found a suitable one yet . I will continue to look as my RPM's are rather high on the freeway so I feel your pain . My truck has a 283 replacing the original 230/6 cylinder .Depending on your original transmission , your driveshaft will most likely have to be shortened but the results will be worth it . Ironically , two years ago , I owned a 1985 S10 2.8L with the transmission I'm now looking for . I sold it , maybe I should have kept it and used the transmission from it ? I guess that's water under the bridge ? Good luck and keep us updated !

Money being no object, the current new rage is the Tremec TKO 5 or 6 speed manual. 33 % lower rpms. 8 different shifter locations available! Roush racing loves 'em.

The associate editor put one in his 72 C10 and it works like a charm.

Very true Chris, it also helps when the magazine flips the bill.

Forget it, have you not checked shifter location? it will be in your hip and to far rearwards to comfortably operate, mechanical issues aside. SMALL bucket seats would be the only thing that will work, also.
