Hi, I am in great need of help. I purchased my truck, the front axle had been converted to disk - 5 lug. The rear is original 8 lug. I know that this will sound stupid, but I want to convert the truck back to 8 lug drums. First of all I will not need to carry two types of spare tires. Second, I would like to have the truck back to original condition. Problem: I have none of the original parts of the front brakes and I am unable to find them ANYWHERE!! I anyone has leads or has some complete 8 lug brake assemblies that they are willing to sell, I AM INTERESTED.
Thanks

I have the complete original 1950 3600 front axle, brakes, 8 lug drums and all.
Oddly enough, I have a 5 lug to eight lug conversion plate if you want to try and retain your front disc brakes.
I'm in St. Louis, MO.
If interested please send me a message

I have a 1950 chevy 3600 that I converted to power steering and disc brakes while retaining the straight axle. I have owned it for 15 years. The first 3 I drove the truck bone stock. I had totally refurbished the original breaking system and I,m here to tell you it sucks. Unless you are building a show truck that needs to be stock use the adapter to make it 8 lug or better yet change the back to 5 lug so wheel choices are unlimited. Once you put the center hub on the wheel you don't see them anyway. Just for saftey and ease of driving keep the disc. Braking technology today is lightyears ahead of 1952. Are you having any issues with the front end wandering around when at higher speeds?

Hi there,
I have a '51 Chev 3/4 ton that I'd like to convert to discs (or a tleast different drums as I can't find drums for it anywhere!). How hard is the process and can I easily get a conversion kit for the '51 where it is a rarity?

Rod,
Are you still wanting to go with 8 lugs? Makes finding Disc brakes much harder.
Installing a 3100 straight front axle in your 3/4 ton is no problem and lots of 5 or 6 lug disc brake kits are available. You will want to upgrade to a power dual master cylinder too.
Bermudja and I did finally get together on this post and he is now rolling around with OlBlue's old axle and drums on his '53.

I don't need to go with the 8 lug for a conversion. Is the 3100 axle the 1/2 ton version? We do still use the truck as a work truck and like to haul decent loads with it. I don't want to compromise that if I can help it.
What do you think?

Rod,
Not an issue with the loads, the 1/2 ton axle is still fairly stout and you can keep your 3/4 springs in place, It was very easy to just drop the U-bolts and swap axles to gain the different spindle diameter. I found one that just had the Kingpins replaced. There should be plenty of axles around since so many go to IFS.

I had considered keeping the original axle in place, buying new 1/2 ton dropped spindles and boring them out to work with the 3/4 ton axle. Curious if anyone has done this. Obviously much more work and I'm not sure the spindle yoke is interchangeable.
good luck
