I have been reading about trying to figure out exactly what you have and I recently purchased a classic truck from a buddy of mine and am trying to figure out exactly what I have. This is the information so far and if I need to get more I can definitly do that. The plate on the back of the transmission bell is blank, so I am not sure if that is a replacement or not something of importance. The informatin I do have is:
VIN from behind distributer: CON1 A224 Serial from driver side: 6GP J 11909
And you can see the truck here. I actually have it broken down a bit further now and really need to get the latest build photos up. Thank you very much, and I have learned alot reading thru these forums.
My First Chevy
*** UPDATE ***
This is what I have learned so far thanks to www.theclassicchevrolet.com
The "6" indicates that your truck was made in Oakland, CA. "GP" indicates model, 3100. "J" indicates month it was manufactured (10th month). The 11909 means that your truck was the 10908th 3100 built (the numbers started with 1001). I don't have any total production numbers available.
The engine (if original) is an inline ohv Thriftmaster Six. Cast-iron, block with bore & stroke of 3-12 x 3-3/4 in. Displacement: 216.5 cid. Compression ratio: 6.6:1. Gross horsepower 90 at 3300 rpm. Gross torque: 174 lbs-ft at 1200-2000 rpm. Four main bearings, mechanical lifters. Carter one-barrel downdraft model W1-574S.
