Hi, new here, looks like a great forum! I'll give you a quick background, the 1954 3100 was my first vehicle. I've had it since 1974, my Dad bought it around 1956. Dad and I put a 350 & TH350 in it around 1978. In 1992 to save some insurance money I parked it (Big mistake) Got it cleaned up and running recently, took it for it's first road trip this last weekend and she ran great, amazing what a little elbow grease and TLC will get you! I have always wanted headers and picked up a set of block huggers, even with the stock steering box moved as far over as possible they are a no-go. I plan to install a 3" drop front axle in the near future and the old steering box has to go. What is the best manual box to run? Rack & Pinion? I see power kits all over the place, any manual kits out there? Or advise on what to start scrounging up?
Here is a picture from last week end, I'll post more as she progresses. Thanks for any advise.

Nice looking truck. LMC Trucks sells boxes. If you upgrade to Rack & Pinion you should upgrade to power steering too.

Not a kit, but many folks use a late 80's toyota truck box to solve this problem, when using a straight axle. Pretty shure Classic trucks mag had an article on it about ten years ago. Looked real easy to do. Two borgensen universal steering joints should 'z' the steering shaft out of the way. You'll also need a way to support one end of the u joints to the frame, some sort of bracket with a bearing for the shaft to run thru.

Thanks guys, I sure would like to find a copy of that article! I see no need for power steering and enjoy being actively involved while driving I put power steering in my 76 FJ40 when I installed a big block, seems like constant maintenance, belts, pumps and hoses, never again.

I'll be sticking around, still trying to find more info out on the steering box swap, but at least I'm pointed in the right direction.
