Im a newbie and just picked up a 1958 gmc.I heard the 1958 body would go on a s10 frame.does anyone know if thats true and what other frames work with it.It seems it would be the easiest way to upgrade suspension.

You'll be best advised to stick with the stock frame.
If an s-10 worked out easier we'd have heard about it, they'ed made s-10s for a long time, yet not one mention of such conversion in any magazine I've seen in ten years or more. S-10 frame dips down past the front suspention, several inches, and dips up agian ahead of the rear. Now a 58 frame is pretty much straight.
I have specs and measurements of almost every forgein and domestic pickup frame made in the past fourty years , hoping to come across  anything better as a swap.

I have seen it done with a C-10 frame, and that guy said he wouldn't do it again.

My 59 GMC has a dodge dakota crossmember, whole thing took like four hours.
Pulled the stock rear axle and installed a '80 trans am rear end with disk brakes, which now sits on TOP of the leaves.
All in all you could do a frame this way in a week, paint and all, once you procure parts.
And besides, there's less to get rid of when done this way,[a whole frame, etc] wifey would apreciate that.

yea i see what your saying.thanks for the input.what did you use to put disk breaks on front.I put disk breaks on my 68 gmc.i used spendals off a 72 and replaced balljoints for a 72.looking back if i had of known i would have used spendals off something in the 80s.I didnt know all i would have to change was balljoints.

You can get discs kit from CPP, and I think a 72 c10 with discs will fit too.

Well my Dakota crossmember allowed me to got pick the suspention components of a boneyard  '90 Dakota, disc brakes being part of it. Only $200. bucks to!

My notes show that 60-72 chevy 1/2 ton frames come the closest to working,.. almost the exact width, wheelbase..and very little 'kick' to the rear portion,.. but of course they're worn out too...
One of the problems of an s-10 frame is the suspention track width.
[See I know what your thinking ,..is that you'd find an S-10 that the components were'nt worn out on yet and all the efforts could be put into the conversion and not an entire rebuild..good thinking,...but]
It's actually about the same problem that some of 'pinto' IFS swaps have.. it could stand being wider.

i havnt made it to the disc brakes yet but i did take a brake pedal out of a 74 and made a braket for it and put it and the mastercylinder on the 58.Im sure the brake upgrade will be a plus.Im doing something different on this one.I have a 1973 ford f100 with a good 240 6 cylinder and auto transmission.I took the wiring harness out of it and put it in the 58 and going to put the motor in it this weekend.

well,i got the ford 240 in and hooked up all except cross member under tranny.driveshaft is all hooked up and all wiring complete.only problem i run into is i dont think im going to have room to use the fan on motor.looks like i will have to run electric fan.i guess ford motor is longer than chevy.which is fine.i have had a couple electric fans for years so now i can put them to use.
