I am new to the board and wanted to chime in and ask a few things. I am the owner of a 40 Ford Pick up that I inheirited from my dad who past away last month from cancer. He and I have worked on it a bit but nothing serious. It is sitting on a 74 Nova chassis with a 75 Chevy 350 in it. I am in the process of upgrading the front end with discs, new springs and a sway bar. My next thing would be the rear end. I was thinking of putting a Ford 9" underneith but wasn't sure if the work was worth it. I think it's an 8 inch under it now. If I keep the chevy rear end, I want to replace the springs shocks and add a sway bar there as well. My questions are:

Is there a kit to do the rearend swap?
Why isn't there a catagory for Fords older than 49?

Thanks, Flathead Red

1-yes. 2-I dunno. Been eyeballing a '41.
I wus sorta hoping this was gonna be a tale of a flathead.
Why does every Ford have to sport a Chevy mill?
300 hp and less, gear ratio is far more important than 8 vs. 9.
BTW, panhard rods are the best result, bang for buck.
One day I will put a ford engine inna chevy just to piss ALL those doctors and airline pilots off!
you know, the ones at shows that 'say' they built it themselves?
They usually bring those folding recliners to sit in.
Sorry 'bout Dad.

Thanks for the input. I prefer a Ford mill in a Ford truck but my Dad didn't so I just work with what I have as money is very tight. The stock gearing in the 8.5 is 2.73. What would be a better choice? It's not a highway driver but I would like it to be. I'll look into panhard bars. Thanks for the help. By the way my screen name comes with me from other motorcycle boards. The reference is Flathead Harleys.

Well, we still don't know the ratio of the other rearend,or the transmission, but, if you are not going to run an overdrive type tranny 273 isn't bad for a driver. Now, if you want to snap necks off the line [at the expense of hiway rpms] maybe 3.73.or thereabouts.
Remember, even tire/wheel height size effects your gearing, overall.

It's a Trubo 350 Tranny. I just want a strong rear end that if I decide to mash the gas I won't detonate the rear end. The motor is a 75 350 that is supposed to be pretty anemic by the book. I think it was rated at 250 HP. but it has a bigger card/ manifold and soon to have headers, so a bit more HP.
