1952 brakes

I'm having trouble getting the drums off the rear axle. I was using the classic truck's article, but it shows the drums already off. I followed the shop manual and disconnected the emergency brake from the cross bar. Is there something I'm missing or do I need t use a bigger hammer?

What article are you referring to?  

Should be a slot on back side of backing plate . Use a brake spoon (Correct tool ) or large flat screwdriver to turn star wheel that will loosen brake shoes away from drum. You will have to turn star wheel one direction or the other to loosen.  Drum develop a ridge or grooves that cause the shoe to hang up. Also take some finesse with hammer . Use some penetrating oil on center where axle hub comes through.

Drum Brake System Basics - Night School  

There is no slot on the back. There is a small semi-circle hole on the front of the drum, but I can't tell if its for brake adjustment. I'm really not sure when the drums were off last, so as you say it may just require some more rust penetration and a bigger hammer. I just want to make sure the hole in the front of the drum is not for brake adjustment before I get out the hammer.

Anyone know of the hole I'm referring to?

The slot ie: rectangle shaped hole is on the back for adjusting . There is a chance that someone actualy put the rubber plug back in .....Dude  

Thanks, found the slot. It was a little metal tab, and had to knock some rust off to get to it. now the problem is to get the adjustment screw to move. It's probably frozen. I sprayed some rust penetrate into it but no luck. any more suggestions on how to break it free?

Either spray it a few times, and work it until it frees up, or cut off the hold down pins, so the shoes come off with the drum.  The cylinder pins still might give you some trouble.
