Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a 5.3 and a 6.0 Chevy engine. I found one, the guy says it's a 6.0, but I don't know what to look for. Looking to buy for the 1949 Crew Coe that I'm building. Thanks

Burb,

It actually depends on the year. GM engineers have made several changes to the LS1 engines, but the '99 through '03 5.3L will have a 12551358 cast iron block.
There also was a few that had an aluminum block.. not sure where they were founded or what the casting number is.

All of the'99-'04 6.0L blocks are made of cast iron and have the number 12551364 along with 6.0L cast on the block itself.

I'm actually not a big fan of the LS1 as a replacement engine as there has been so many tweaks over the years that you really need to be careful on the electronics. Also, of course, there is the piston slap and the knock sensor or spark knocking issues that so many early LS1s suffered under load.  All being said, when they run well.. you have a rocket.  Good Luck, I hope this helps!

Thanks, I went ahead and bought it anyway, for the price and less than 40,000 miles I did not think I could pass it up. The block has 12551354 and the heads have 317.

those heads flow like the ls6(243 castings) I think they are 210cc intake flow,
with 75cc combustion chambers,, here is a link
