I am looking at putting a Heidts mustang 2 IFS under my 53 chevy. I would like to hear from some guys that have gone this route. Looking for feedback?
I want to do a low budget upgrade that handles well. This is a dailey driver and not a show truck.

If you can afford it I would say go with the Heidts IFS. From what I have heard it a nice IFS.

Go with Heidts and you won't be dissapointed . I have one in my '49 and would'nt even consider driving one of these old trucks with a straight axle/steering box under it daily . I do wish I would have gone the power steering route though instead of manual . I kinda like being able to drive with one hand ! You will want the sway bar and go with some bigger brakes - I run GM A-body disc on everything I've built and this one is the first I've done with power brakes - love 'em !

Quality units, but still totally based on a Pinto suspention and don't handle that good compaired to dakota [I.C.] or corvette kits,[like Meyers]or even GM f body clips.
To install a Heidts you'll spend the extra money on larger rotors and anti sway,[and then yer good], but the aforementioned kits have these items as used components, stock item.
Heidts has a bump steer problem when used with 2" lowered spindles.
Most the pinto kits do actually.
I think they have at least adressed the track width problem, which is probably why they are not amoungst the cheaper kits.
Mustang2- pinto kits are generally 2" less wide than your stock suspention.
You gotta tall cab with all the weighty glass up high. These in combo cause roll.
But it's still better than the stock ride and steering overall, and the lowering helps, which is why people "are not dissapointed".
They would be, however, if they rode in my Industrial chassis truck or a Myers corvette component truck.
I came out about $800.00 in savings over a Heidts also.

Thing is I can still drive my truck like a truck. Mustang 2 kits you have to drive carefully.
Better slow WAAAY down crossing train tracks and potholes the bumpsteer is unsettling at best, and there's been reports of some just breaking.
Seems rack and pinions aren't really meant to stretch left and right at the same time...

Are you sure about that. I have hit some curbs pretty hard and they survived. Woops I forgot I did align my truck a couple time.

Great feedback! I never heard about the bump steer until now! I went with the TCI set up and it is coming together nicely. My frame has seen a lot of abuse over the years and is causing some fit issues. I pulled the diamond out of the frame and got everthing square now. If I had a bigger budget I would have went with a new frame all together. Live and learn!

I really like dealing with TCI but I would not roll out that kind cash without doing my home work. I have learned a lot about these trucks thru this site and would take in a couple shows. I am going to the Goodguys event @ Pocono this weekend. Gonna check into this bump steer issue. I run the bodyshop for Bryner Chevy and I am doing a retro service truck.

Heidt's has been notified of the bump steer issue, as had Fatmans, from the shops who install them. They did nothing so I doubt you'll get anyone to admit it.
Denial is way cheaper than solving a problem.

Bump-steer is the result of poor (and sometimes unavoidable) suspension geometry. The reaction is described as the vehicle steering off the intended track, on it's own (without driver input), when encountering a bump. Sometimes it is described by a driver as the vehicle needing constant direction correction whenever driving over a bump.
I would like to hear from guys who have IFS upgrades. Has anybody had this issue?

Never experienced bump steer but it sound like something I would not enjoy. I think if would scare the #$%^ out of me.

It's largely dropped spindles to blame. It puts the rack & pinion at odds.
These kit guys would only have to reposition the rack & pinion FOR dropped spindles, you'd think they'd KNOW almost everyone will use dropped spindles.
Or, better still the spindles themselves could be redesigned, but that's even less likely.
The spindles are generally outsoursed. And often Chinese. D [cough]JM[coughcough]
Some use custom A arms that help,as this can give you drop without dropped spindles, BUT, this A arm redesign is peralously low to the ground.

I still maintain putting a pinto under a truck is just weird, however.
You may disagree, but, we can all agree looks should never superseed funtion, no?

Well Guys after a couple sleepless nights I have decided to put a new TCI frame under my 53. I already purchased the TCI IFS and rear kit so I called them and got a price for a builders frame for $3,900. It doesn't make sense for me to try and work with the frame I have now. (for safety reasons). I have not pulled the trigger yet on placing the order. I am going to the Goodguys show this weekend @ Pocono and plan on making a decision after talking with more fo us.
I always welcome feedback!
