i have a 1956 chevrolet step side 3100 pick up, i also have a 1988 chevrolet silverado z71 step side pick up. they are both short wheel based.  can i take the 87 frame and install under the 56 body with ease?

No.  The 56 is a basically flat frame.  The 88 is not, and a lot wider.  The 88 wheelbase should be about 3" longer, too.
