well I have a 77 F100 Ranger and I would like to know how can I tell what kind of engine it has. After going through the serial numbers on the drivers door with the Hanes manual the original engine was a 390. But the guy that sold it to me told me it was a 400. So how can I tell what engine it has???..it also has a 4 speed manual transmission would that be the C4??..i would like to know before trying to put parts that are not for that type of engine.

The 351M and the 400 have the same basic design and structure from the outside. The stock carb on the 400 was a motorcraft 2 barrel. The C4 was a 3 speed automatic. You probably have a Warner, New Process, or if you have overdrive, a Clark. These were the three 4-speed manuals used in f-100 thru f350.
