Dash Lights Not Working

I have a 58 Chevy P/U that the dash lights do not work on.  I have determined that it is a ground issue as all of the sockets are getting power.  The wiring diagram seems to indicate that the bulbs are grounded through the cluster but I am not sure.  Has anyone run into this before, and if so, how did you resolve it.

a few things...

lets start with the ground cable connections...
negative battery post to the engine block
negative battery post to the body
engine block to the body..

this is how later models are grounded..

i am going to study the 58 truck wiring diagram.. back in a little while...

electrons do flow from negative to positive.. so if there is not a good ground connection. there will NOT be any or enough electrons to operate the bulbs or circuit..

this is what your cluster bulb sockets look like... they do ground to the cluster housing..

there is nothing wrong with running an additional ground wire from the inside of the firewall or one of the dashboard brackets... to the back of the cluster..

more than likely gm grounded it thru the mounting screws ...  with a nice coat of paint.. there might not be enough ground contact to supply the cluster lamps..
