Hi All - I am so out of my element. My poor nephew is trying so hard to pick him self up and get on with life. We recently had him move in with us and his Grandfather gave him his old truck. Well he called me to pick him up because the Fire Department had just put out a fire in his car. It doesn't really look all that bad. On a visual it looks like the fire stemmed from the carburetor, and it melted the distributor and cap as well as the spark plug wires, and other wires in area. My question is what damage should we really be looking for, and is it even worth it?Any input would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to come up with a parts list to see if it's financially worth it.Jamie
photos would help.... almost everything is available easily.... except for air cleaner housings.. and those are NOT hard to find. . and can usually be cleaned up after a fire..carbs... distributers.. spark plug wires... caps and rotors... wiring harnesses. can be patched or replaced as they unplug over by the drivers feet on the firewall... there are usually 2 or 3 harness under the hood.. one for the engine. alternator, starter, ignition. oil pressure, coolant temp .. one for the lighting... and perhaps.. something to the blower/hvac... there are also PREBENT fuel lines available from the fuel pump to the carb inlet..one thing...please pull ALL the spark plugs... spray WD40 or squirt some 30 weight motor oil into the holes and rig up a way to crank the engine... you/he will need to pinch off the fuel line going into the pump so you are not pumping gasoline. and do not use the key.. in fact.. i will have to give you instructions on just what to do.. but i don't want to start an electrical fire.. but i want to make sure that any water or fire extinguisher did not get into the engine or cylinders .. carefully photograph the wiring harnesses.. tag the ends .. disconnect from the bulk head connector.. the power running into the harness is probably running behind the battery and across the core support and to the bulk head connector.. do you also have a wiring diagram????
