Just picked up a 52 chevy pickup. currently it has a v8 swap with and vintage air system. Looking to upgrade the front steering. What are the options? Currently it is stock steering, looks like they used the old hot rodder solution to the steering box by moving it over a couple inches to clear the v8 exhaust. Everything in the stock steering has been replaced. including stock box and almost no miles on it since then. What are upgrade options? Obviously theres the mustang II ifs front end swap. Do these work with a sbc swap? Is there a way to do rack and pinion without the ifs swap? I just hate to delete all of the progress from the previous owner when he replaced every part in the front end. I have an employee who is an expert fabricator. he said it would be possible to go rack and pinion but was worried about the steering box clearing. So what do you guys think, is there other options than the mustang II?
accidentally posted twice, could a mod delete one? appreciate it very much.
there are a bunch of articles on various swaps in the 2 classic truck magazines here..custom classic trucks is the other classic truck mag here..and the other 30 car and truck magazines.. front clip swaps are out of the circle of knowledge i have gathered.. i am an engine and electrical guy.. there is a search window above right.. you can use.. i will look around when i have some time late tonight.. as for V8 chevy headers.. i spotted some sandersons that have a forward slant to the left header.. that will clear a rear steer box..
I tried to search and can't find what i want, not used to this forum and am apparently stupid. can't find much more even with google that actually suggests methods or products or has walk through guides of any truck in my situation.Again sorry, I'm an avid offroader and thats what we focus on in my shop so this classic chevy game is completely new to me. Little more background. Truck has front disc brake swap along with under the floor power brakes. Still factory steering. Figured that would help explain why i wasn't ready to immediately jump on the ifs swap bandwagon since its got all that in it.EDIT: the headers may or may not be the solution. I don't know. What i was trying to find was can i put rack and pinion on since it has the v8 swap? they make kits for rack and pinion but don't say anything about v8 swaps. plus my stock box has been moved, if i got the rack and pinion kit would it work with the moved stock box location? Or would i have to relocate the new kit box to the factory location? whats involved? Not trying to be a dick or seem ignorant, just trying to restate the point of the post.
i figured i would spend a few minutes to get you started...i have trouble finding stuff also...and hah.. i also cover the fourwheeler forums.. as i know jeep fuel injection issues..these are front clip articles.. probably not quite what you want.http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/0910clt_art_morrison_enterprises_ifs_front_clip_install/viewall.htmlhttp://www.classictrucks.com/tech/1301clt_frontend_fix_fatman_clip/http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/1402_corvette_front_suspension/viewall.htmlhttp://www.streetrodderweb.com/tech/1310_bolt_in_corvette_independent_front_suspension_for_chevys/viewall.html
Yeah, these are all for an ifs front end. thanks for the help and responses!this install is on a ford, but will give a quick few pictures to show what i was suggesting. Just wondering if anyone has installed a kit like this on a v8 swapped chevy of my year range. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/911380-no-limit-rack-and-pinion-kit-for-straight-axle-report.htmlThey make a kit for my year range, but it says it won't work with factory column and doesn't say anything about them being v8 swapped. I tried getting ahold of them to get info but haven't had any responses yet. Perhaps my hillbilly steering box relocation would let their box mount where mine is relocated to and still allow utilization of the factory column.
