I have been building this 78 GMC since I was 17 (24 now) with the help of my dad. When I bought it for $300 bucks it had a straight 6 motor and 465 transmission in it. So far with all the money I have been able to spare I have cleaned up the interior and threw a quickie paint job on it just to keep from getting more rust. I have also replaced the engine, it now has a 350 bored out 30 over with a Weiann manifold and a 750 cfm Edelbrock 4 barrel. I also had a custom dual exhaust made for it. We also switched from the 4:11 rear end to a 3:88 or 3:85 I cant remember which without pulling out my records. So far all that has been bolt in place stuff. Now I am looking to swap my 465 four speed trans. with something a little more stream line. I am honestly a little lost when it comes to this area. I was told that the NP 3500 was a good place to start looking but I'm not sure what it will take to get linkage right and what will and wont bolt up to my bell housing and input shaft. Any help would be great. Thanks.
there were almost a dozen truck magazines on this site... the offroad magazines got switched around somewhat.. some of the articles are still there..there are a lot of options in manual transmissions..i am not a transmission swap expert..
since this has been a long term project.. i will look around over the next few days..see what i can find..you might be better off with an NV4500... you will want to search out the advance adaptors site or the novak site for info...you did not say if it is a 2 wheel drive or a 4x4...
Its a 2 wheel drive, short bed, single cab.
start with this..http://www.customclassictrucks.com/techarticles/0708cct_chevy_5_speed_transmission/viewall.htmlshould cover some of it
here is another thats closer to what you have.http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/transmission-drivetrain/131-0705-1986-chevy-1-ton-5-speed-manual-transmission-swap/except for the 4 wheel drive...
Thank you waynep712222, good stuff. Think this is going to change my direction here a bit.
